GeneSight® Testing (Pharmacogenetic Testing)
GeneSight® testing is a pharmacogenetic test that may help inform psychiatric medication decisions based on how your body processes certain medications. At Reed Psychiatry, GeneSight testing is offered when clinically appropriate and is used as one piece of information alongside your symptoms, history, and treatment goals.
What GeneSight Testing Is?
GeneSight is a cheek-swab genetic test that analyzes specific genes involved in how certain psychiatric medications are metabolized or may be tolerated. The results organize medications into categories that can help guide discussion around dosing considerations, side-effect risk, and potential medication selection. Test results are intended to supplement — not replace — clinical judgment and require ongoing monitoring and follow-up.
Who May Benefit?
GeneSight testing may be considered for patients who:
• Have experienced side effects with multiple medications
• Have had limited benefit from prior medication trials
• Are interested in a more personalized approach to medication management
Not everyone needs pharmacogenetic testing, and we will discuss whether it is appropriate for your individual situation.
What to Expect?
1. We first review whether GeneSight testing is clinically appropriate during a medication visit
2. If ordered, the test is completed via cheek swab (in-clinic or shipped to your home, depending on the situation)
3. Results are typically available after processing and are reviewed together in a follow-up appointment
4. Results are used as one data point when making shared treatment decisions
Important Limitations
• GeneSight results do not guarantee that a medication will work or cause side effects
• Medications should not be changed based solely on test results
• All psychiatric medications still require careful clinical monitoring
• Some medications may be used off-label based on clinical judgment
Cost & Insurance Information
GeneSight works with most insurance plans and offers patient cost protections:
• Insurance is billed directly by GeneSight
• If your estimated cost is more than $330, GeneSight will contact you before processing the test
• Many commercially insured patients pay $0–$330 out of pocket
• Financial assistance programs are available for qualifying patients based on income
• Medicare, Medicaid, and Medicare Advantage plans often have $0 out-of-pocket cost, though eligibility varies
We are happy to review typical cost scenarios before ordering the test.
Controlled Substance Policy
To ensure safe, ethical care, controlled substances (such as stimulants or certain anxiety/sleep medications):
Are prescribed only when clinically appropriate
Require an initial psychiatric evaluation and ongoing monitoring
May require periodic urine drug screens, PDMP checks, or in-person visits
Must be taken exactly as prescribed—no early refills, replacements, or dose changes without evaluation
Our goal is to use controlled medications safely and only when they are the best option for you.
Therapy-Informed Care
Medication alone is rarely the full solution. Chandler integrates brief, skills-based therapeutic approaches to support emotional and behavioral health during medication visits:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Mindfulness strategies
Motivational interviewing
Strength-based and humanistic techniques
This helps connect the “why” behind symptoms with the “how” of getting better.
Safety Monitoring
Depending on your treatment, safety monitoring may include:
Vital signs during in-person visits
Laboratory tests (thyroid, electrolytes, CBC, metabolic panels)
ECG (for certain medications or risk factors)
PDMP review for controlled substances
Collaboration with your therapist or PCP (with your consent)
These measures help ensure that medication remains safe and effective long-term.
